Due to Madelene’s 21st Birthday the ‘Ladies’ were unable to make up the numbers in the 2017 John Smith’s Cup. Played as a singles knock-out with an initial ’round-robin’ league the winners of each league were:  Reg Horman, Barbara Waring, Mark Croasdale and holding up the B team end of things Bob Shepherd. The semi-finals were enhanced by using for practice purposes scoring boards, superbly managed by Mike Holdsworth and manned by Frank and Sue.

First off was Reg after playing Barbara in a close match (well it was at the start!).

Get your hands OFF! Losing semi-finalist would be winner Barbara

Some hours later the second finalist emerged as Bob Shepherd who for the second time in a week managed to beat Mark C in an excellent game of bowls.

Losing Semi finalist 2 Mark Croasdale

The Final was a thriller. Bob, playing extremely well on a wet and heavy green took an early lead 13-5 with continued excellent bowling corner to corner. Reg won an end and didn’t change a thing, also bowling corner to corner. He pulled the game back to 14 across and from there on in it was like watching two heavyweight boxers exchanging blow by blow punches. At 19 across, Reg bowled another two close woods on a tricky mark and especially for left-handers.  Bob first wood didn’t count but his last and final wood of the end was brilliant. It won the end and saved the game. 20-19 to Bob. In what would be the last end, Bob let Reg in after a poor first wood and didn’t improve with his second Reg turned it over to make another winning wood to win an excellent Final 21-20. Neither player deserving to lose.

Rain soaked winner Reg Horman with President Alan Cottam

Bob, having played all day in the rain had in fact ‘shrunk’.

So for the second year running Reg won the John Smith’s Cup. Remarkably this competition finished in daylight and post-presentation celebrations were taken across the road. A VERY strange site was seen in there…

Recently married Landlord Mark drinking COFFEE at the bar! Well done Ann.

Great completion and a final word to wish Keith a speedy recovery. Next competition is the End of Season Competition. This will now be played Sunday 8th October.
